Vote Yes on 3A.
Support Basalt’s
Workforce and Economy.
Voting Yes on 3A will:
Provide much-needed workforce housing in Basalt
Invest in our local workforce and small businesses
Cutdown on traffic and congestion
The lack of workforce housing impacts our community. Families can’t afford to build roots here. Businesses can’t find workers. And more traffic and congestion are added to our roads as workers come into Basalt form farther way.
That’s because housing costs are out of reach for too many.
Voting Yes on 3A gives Basalt voters a chance to do something real about housing. 3A is a modest increase in the Town’s lodging tax from 4% to 6%. That small increase, paid primarily by visitors who stay in hotels and short-term rentals, will generate up to $300,000 a year in dedicated, sustainable funding for workforce housing.
The funds will support Basalt’s Affordable Housing Fund and focus on projects that matter:
Partnering with nonprofits and developers to build more affordable homes
Supporting down-payment assistance and deed restrictions to make homeownership possible
Maintaining and expanding the Town’s stock of workforce housing
The Town of Basalt is not starting from scratch. Basalt already has 14 town-owned units, with more on the way — six at Basalt Center Circle, four at Stott’s Mill, and a 16-unit project near the rugby field in partnership with Pitkin County. These are real homes for real workers. The proposed lodging tax increase ensures that momentum doesn’t stall.
We’ve studied the problem. We’ve launched creative solutions. Now it’s time to give those solutions sustainable funding.
Basalt thrives when the people who work here can live here. For a couple extra dollars a night from visitors, we can make sure there’s a place for Basalt’s workforce to live.
