Issue 3A’s 0.5% sales tax would support a new Public Services Facility intended to provide:

  • For Basalt Police Department: Secure evidence and investigation areas, private spaces for victims, secure vehicle storage and appropriate areas for emergency operations.

  • For Public Works Department: Centralized equipment storage and maintenance, improved deployment of crews and better protection of Town vehicles and equipment.

  • For Basalt Residents and Businesses: Two critical departments working together to better serve our community over the long term.

ONE FACILITY. TWO ESSENTIAL SERVICES.

Wildfires, floods, utility disruptions and major traffic incidents can require coordinated responses from multiple Town departments.

Bringing Police and Public Works together would allow the departments to operate from the same centralized location and provide dedicated space and infrastructure for their respective operations.

Ballot Issue 3A asks Basalt voters to consider a 0.5% sales tax — one-half cent on every dollar of taxable purchases — to support a new Public Services Facility for Basalt’s Police and Public Works departments.

The proposed facility would bring these essential services together in a modern, purpose-built location designed to improve operations, coordination and service to the community.

BASALT RELIES ON POLICE AND PUBLIC WORKS EVERY DAY

A strong community depends on doing the basics well.

That means having police services available when emergencies occur, maintaining streets and infrastructure, and taking care of the parks, trails and public spaces residents and visitors use every day.

Today, both Basalt Police and Public Works operate from facilities that present operational challenges.

Basalt Police Department

Basalt’s police officers operate in a shared building that was not designed for modern law enforcement.

The current facility lacks:

✓ Dedicated interview and investigation areas
✓ Appropriate evidence-handling space
✓ Secure parking for police vehicles
✓ Adequate detainee-processing areas
✓ Sufficient emergency-operations space
✓ Private spaces for victims and sensitive conversations

The proposed facility would provide dedicated areas designed around modern police operations and public access.

Public Works Department

Public Works maintains many of the community assets Basalt residents use every day, including streets, sidewalks, parks, trails, public buildings, streetlights, trees and other infrastructure. Public Works staff and equipment operate from multiple locations, including temporary structures.

A centralized facility would provide:

✓ Improved equipment maintenance
✓ More efficient deployment of crews and equipment
✓ Better protection of taxpayer-owned vehicles and equipment
✓ Improved coordination with Police during emergencies
